Our Story

For over 10 years, we have been bringing authentic Japanese art to Europe

Densho - Japanese 伝承 for "passing on tradition" - emerged from a deep fascination with the art and craftsmanship of Japan. For over 10 years, we have been tracking down handcrafted unique works with great care and passion, bringing to life the centuries-old traditions of Japanese painting, calligraphy, and ceramic art.

Our pieces come from a wide variety of carefully vetted sources: from Japanese auction houses, from private collectors parting with cherished objects, and sometimes from the environment of Zen temples, where many of these works of art held a place in the tea ceremony or in quiet contemplation for generations. Each kakemono, each chawan, each guinomi, and each tokkuri thus tells its own story — shaped by the hand of its creator and the years it has already accompanied.

Before a piece finds its way into our shop, we examine it closely: for aesthetics, condition, and the quality of its craftsmanship. We prefer genuine unique works over mass-produced goods — and where we additionally offer prints in kakemono format, we label this transparently and clearly.

Our goal is to give people in Europe and around the world straightforward and trustworthy access to Japanese art — with guidance, honest descriptions of each object, and the appreciation that these special works of art deserve. For a decade, we have accompanied collectors, tea enthusiasts, and art lovers on their own journey of discovery through Japanese aesthetics — one piece at a time.

Are all products at densho.de really one-of-a-kind?

Yes, nearly all items in our range are handcrafted unique works, individually acquired in Japan. They are not mass-produced goods – accordingly, each piece exists only once, and once sold it is no longer available.

Will my order be shipped insured and carefully packaged?

Yes, particularly fragile objects such as kakemono, ceramics, or lacquerware are packaged by us with special care so that they arrive at your home undamaged and in their full beauty. We generally ship items as an insured DHL package, with the risk of transport being on our side. Should you notice clear external damage to the packaging upon receipt of the package, please document it carefully in the form of photos so that a claim can be made with the insurance at the shipping provider.

How long does shipping take, and are there any customs fees?

All works offered by us are in stock and are shipped promptly after your order. Within Germany, delivery takes 2-3 business days; within the EU, it is usually 5-7 days. Accordingly, no customs fees apply in Germany and the EU. Outside the EU, delivery times vary between 1-3 weeks depending on the destination country. Please check with your local customs office to find out whether customs fees may apply in your country.

How do I properly care for my Japanese art?

Proper care depends heavily on the material – for example, kakemono require shaded storage and regular rotation, ceramics should generally be cleaned by hand, and lacquerware does not tolerate aggressive cleaning agents. Detailed care instructions can be found in the respective product category as well as in the product description of the individual item.

Can I make individual requests, e.g., regarding motif, size, or color?

Since most of our pieces are antique unique works, we are not able to procure a specific motif or similar on short notice. However, we would be happy to search for you and provide you with an individual offer if we find something suitable. Contact us and we will let you know shortly what can be done.

Are the works new or antique?

Both – our range extends from contemporary works by living Japanese artists and potters to antique pieces. Age and date of creation are noted in the product description, where known.

Where do the artworks come from and how do you ensure authenticity?

All objects are sourced directly from Japan, from traditional workshops, potters, and artists, through established art and antique dealers, art auctions and estate sales, or old holdings from Zen temples. Where known, we provide information on artist, provenance, age, and signature in the respective product description. Please note that we do not subject most pieces to independent expert examination, but instead provide information based on the statements of previous owners and the condition of the respective object.
