Description
Above a vast mountain landscape rendered in delicate gray tones, wild geese move in loose formation toward the horizon in this Makuri painting, while at the foot of the hills a small village with dense pines can be made out. The evocative, slightly hazy atmosphere is created by the restrained color palette and the softly blending ink tones of the mountains, which convey to the viewer a sense of expanse and stillness.
The autumn migration of wild geese is a motif of long tradition in Japanese landscape painting, symbolizing impermanence and the constant change of the seasons. In combination with the tranquil village scenery, the result is an image of almost poetic seclusion that invites quiet contemplation.
This work is a Makuri, an unframed painting on Honshi paper without mounting onto a hanging scroll mounting. It dates from the Shôwa period and is suitable both for collectors who appreciate the pure pictorial motif and as a basis for an individual later framing or mounting.
