Description
With a few powerful brushstrokes and a generously placed circle as its closing element, a calligraphy of striking conciseness unfolds on this shikishi. The balance between dense, dynamic strokes and the open, round form creates a tension that is typical of Zen calligraphy.
The meaning of the characters can be translated approximately as "Lonely Spirit" or "lonely heart" - a motif that refers to the idea of the clear, self-contained mind as it is pursued in Zen practice. It is precisely this reduction to a few characters that heightens the meditative effect of the work.
