Description
On this shikishi, a multi-line signature can be seen alongside the boldly rendered characters, reinforced by a red seal – a sign that the calligrapher consciously stands behind his work. The meaning of the characters can be translated as "Music and Flowers," two motifs that have long stood for joie de vivre and aesthetic pleasure in Japanese art.
The work was created in the Shôwa period (1926–1989) on a classic shikishi, that firm, square mounting board traditionally used for calligraphy and small ink paintings. The loose, flowing brushwork conveys a buoyant lightness that makes the meaning of the characters immediately palpable.
