Description
In bold, clearly contoured strokes, the pair of characters for "originally" or rather "independent creation" takes shape on this shikishi. The compact, almost block-like brushwork radiates self-confidence and permanence, suggesting the practiced hand of a calligrapher from the Shôwa era (1926–1989), whose signature along with a round red seal can be found to the left of the characters.
The wish to create something original and new is a thought that runs through many areas of Japanese art and lends the calligraphy here an almost programmatic note. As a traditional painting board, the shikishi offers the ink a firm, pleasantly textured surface.
Please note: only the shikishi is delivered. The mount shown in the images is for illustrative purposes only and can be ordered separately from us.
