Description
The vivid red of the robe immediately catches the eye on this Bodhidharma figure, forming an appealing contrast with the darkly toned skin of the face and chest. The wide-open eyes and raised eyebrows lend the gaze a penetrating, almost worried intensity that suits the motif of the watchful Zen monk particularly well.
The figure holds a long, light-colored staff in its hand, whose contrast with the dark flesh tone further enlivens the composition. The robe falls in clearly contoured, dynamic folds over the standing body, while a small turquoise accent at the belt provides an unexpected touch of color. The Kutani porcelain glaze is applied boldly and richly, with fine crackle traces that testify to the piece's long age.
