Description
With brows furrowed in a fierce expression and a piercing gaze, this figure embodies Bodhidharma, the legendary Indian monk who, as the first patriarch, brought Zen Buddhism to China. The deep red glaze of his voluminous robe, from which only the dark head and a single white sleeve hem emerge, lends the depiction an intense, almost dramatic presence.
Made of Kutani porcelain, one of the best-known Japanese porcelain traditions from Ishikawa Prefecture, the figure displays the bold coloring typical of this style, combined with carefully worked details such as the facial features and the folds of the robe. The piece dates from the Meiji period and is thus among the older items in our collection.
As a symbolic figure of perseverance, willpower, and meditation, Bodhidharma is a popular motif in Japanese art and is well suited both as a stylish eye-catcher in a living space and as a meaningful gift for collectors of Asian ceramics.
