Description

Attached at the lower end of a hanging scroll, fuchin serve two purposes at once: they weight the scroll painting so that it does not curl or warp when hung, and at the same time they add a decorative accent. This used set of two made of natural stone captivates with its vivid, green-and-white marbled pattern, reminiscent of polished jade stone and giving each stone its own distinctive, painterly design.

The strong orange-red silk tassels create an appealing color contrast to the cool green of the stones and lend the set a festive, warm character. The finely braided cords come together, in classic fuchin fashion, in the two weights, which sit comfortably in the hand thanks to their oval shape and can be easily attached to the cords of a hanging scroll.

This set was made in the Shôwa period and shows clear signs of wear, testifying to its long years of use. For collectors and owners of traditional Japanese hanging scrolls, this fuchin pair is a practical as well as aesthetically pleasing addition that rounds off the presentation of a hanging scroll in both form and color.
