Description
Fine, almost cloud-like banding runs through the two cream-white natural stones of this fuchin set, giving them a surprisingly lively, almost shimmering surface on closer inspection. Combined with the warm, copper-brown shimmering silk tassels, the overall impression is calm and earthy, blending unobtrusively into the presentation of a hanging scroll.
Fuchin like these are traditionally attached to the lower ends of a hanging scroll, where they weigh down the image, keep it taut, and protect it from warping or rippling. The tassel heads, elaborately interwoven with gold threads, attest to the careful craftsmanship, while the smoothly falling fringes lend the set additional movement.
This used set of two from the Shôwa period is an authentic piece of Japanese hanging scroll culture, combining practical function with a quiet, elegant aesthetic that lends an evocative finish to the lower edge of a kakemono.
