Description
Pure white, finely veined marble forms the calm, refined centerpiece of this used fuchin set, whose two perfectly round weights convince through their understated elegance. Fuchin of this kind are traditionally attached to the lower ends of a hanging scroll to weight the hanging scroll, stabilize it while hanging, and prevent the paper or silk from rippling.
The gold-colored silk tassels create a warm, festive contrast to the cool white of the stones and, in their elaborate knotting, recall traditional Japanese kumihimo craftsmanship. The smoothly polished surface of the two marble spheres catches the light pleasantly, lending the set a subtle preciousness despite its understated coloring.
This pair of fuchin from the Shôwa period shows visible signs of use, testifying to its long service as practical accessory for a hanging scroll. Beyond its pure function as a weight, it always also serves as a visual highlight, elegantly finishing off the lower edge of a hanging scroll and lending the overall composition additional calm.
