Description

Warm, honey-colored veined stone and richly gold-brown silk tassels combine in this fuchin set to create an earthy, warm color composition. The two perfectly round natural stones show fine, cloud-like inclusions that give each weight its own, distinctive pattern and make the set more than a mere functional object.

Fuchin like these traditionally serve to be attached to the lower ends of a kakemono, to weigh down the hanging scroll and to tighten and stabilize it when hung. The elaborately gold-thread-worked tassel heads attest to careful craftsmanship, while the long, smoothly falling fringes lend the set additional movement and elegance.

Dating from the Shôwa period, this used set of two shows the slight signs of wear typical of antiques of this kind. As both a functional and decorative element, it complements the presentation of a hanging scroll not only technically but also sets its own distinctive visual accent through its warm coloring.
