Description
This tea bowl opens widely upward in a broad, flaring shape, allowing the entire speckled glaze surface in creamy white and olive brown to come into its own. This open, conical form is characteristic of Hanganji ware, a lesser-known but tradition-rich Japanese firing tradition distinguished by its earthy, unassuming aesthetic.
The iridescent ash glaze spreads unevenly across the walls, letting the reddish-brown clay body shimmer through in places, lending the bowl a lively, natural appearance. The unglazed foot, with its warm terracotta color, forms an appealing contrast to the lighter glaze above and reveals the craftsmanship of its wheel-thrown making.
This hand-thrown tea bowl comes in a wooden box signed by the master potter and was created in the Heisei period. With its clear, open form and calm coloring, it is a fine example of traditional Japanese tea ceramics, suitable both for practical use and as a decorative collector's item.
