Description
Imperial couple in elaborate court dress, painted on a bright golden ground - this shikishi takes up the motif of the Hina Dolls that are traditionally displayed for the Japanese girls' festival Hinamatsuri in March. Fine details in fabric pattern and headdress lend the two figures courtly dignity and festive splendor.
Hinamatsuri, the doll festival, has its roots in ancient purification rituals and is still celebrated today in many Japanese families to wish girls health and happiness. The depiction of emperor and empress in traditional court robes is one of the classic and most popular pictorial themes of this festival.
A shikishi is a firm, square mounting board for painting and calligraphy. Please note: only the shikishi is supplied; the mount shown in the images serves only as illustration and can be ordered separately from us. A festive, colorful motif with deeply rooted symbolism.
