Beneath a matte glaze shimmering in olive green to ochre tones, the strong facial features of this Bodhidharma figure emerge clearly: bushy eyebrows, an alert, upward-directed gaze, and a carefully worked full beard testify to the craftsmanship with which this piece was shaped.
Bodhidharma, also known as Bodai-Daruma, is regarded as the first patriarch of Zen Buddhism, whom, according to tradition, he brought from India to China toward the end of the 5th century. In Japanese ceramic art he is a popular motif, symbolizing perseverance and spiritual strength. This figure is made of ceramics and shows, in the deeply incised folds of the robe as well as the sculpturally worked hood, the slightly varying form typical of handcrafted unique works.
As a decorative one-of-a-kind piece, this Bodhidharma figure is suited both to devotees of Zen philosophy and to collectors of Japanese craft pottery seeking a characterful unique work with an expressive face.
