Description

The blossom of a morning glory opens in delicate lavender-blue on cream-colored card, its vine curving gently upward while two buds still await their appearance. The leaves are painted in fine, shimmering shades of green, with delicate spots that lend depth to the foliage. At the lower left, a red seal sets the chromatic finishing touch to the understated signature.

The shikishi is one of the most popular formats of traditional Japanese painting and calligraphy, and this one was presumably created in the Shôwa period in pure hand painting. Its square shape gives the composition of blossom, vine, and foliage a calm, clearly bounded frame that directs all concentration to the motif.

Please note that only the painted card itself is supplied. The mounting shown in the photographs serves merely to illustrate how the work might look framed, and can be ordered separately from us upon request.
