A bearded scholar, lost in thought or in search of a verse – figures of poets like this one are among the classic motifs of East Asian figure painting and symbolize a life devoted to leisure and learning.
The painting exists as a Makuri, meaning unmounted on the original Honshi. This form gives collectors the freedom to have the sheet mounted individually, for instance as a Kakemono for the Tokonoma.
