Description
In brilliant tones of gold, green, and red, this kakemono brings together thirteen Buddhist deities who, in the Japanese tradition, are said to accompany the deceased through the various stages of the afterlife. Each figure is depicted with its own halo, individual headdress, and characteristic attributes such as lotus blossoms, staffs, or ritual implements.
Particularly striking is the fiery figure at the lower edge of the image, whose blue skin and blazing flame aureole clearly identify it as a guardian, protective deity, forming a dramatic contrast to the calm, peaceful figures above. The dense arrangement of the thirteen figures in cloud-like formations lends the composition a solemn, almost cosmic order.
Depictions of The 13 Buddhas traditionally served as devotional images for memorial ceremonies and continue to play a role in Japanese mourning culture today. For collectors of Buddhist iconography, this kakemono is a visually powerful and meaningful work.
