Description
A small figure in a blue robe walks toward a low house that nestles half-hidden at the foot of a slope, a bundle in hand. In front of it, several tall, completely bare trees rise upward, their finely branching web standing like a net against the light background. Dark boulders in the foreground give the scene stability and weight.
The color palette is notably sparse: warm ochre for the slopes, muted brownish gray for trunks and stones, with the blue of the clothing as the single clear accent. This restraint draws the eye entirely to the structure of the bare branches and to the vast, empty space surrounding the mountain ridges in the background.
Images of the late season, in which a lone figure walks homeward through a defoliated landscape, are among the most poetic themes of East Asian painting and stand for withdrawal and retreat. In the upper left are a short inscription and a red seal. Executed as a silkscreen print on silk, this hanging scroll, Way Home Between Bare Trees, is a quiet, unobtrusive choice.
