Description
Snow lies heavy on the overhanging leaves of a bamboo grove, while a small brown bird is depicted approaching one of the stalks in flight – a moment of movement amid wintry stillness. The composition skillfully sets pure ink tones for the bamboo against the warm coloring of the bird, creating an appealing contrast.
In the East Asian pictorial tradition, bamboo is regarded as a symbol of steadfastness and inner strength, since it bends in the wind without breaking and retains its form even under the weight of snow. Together with the small bird, an image of vitality emerges that asserts itself even under adverse conditions.
The hanging scroll "Bamboo in Snow" is signed and sealed by Nakajima Ariaki, created in the Meiji period. The work comes with its own wooden box. With its clear, monochrome pictorial language and its wintry motif, this hanging scroll is an atmospheric accent for the cooler season.
