Description
A small blue-gray bird with an orange breast sits on a moss-covered, gnarled branch, above which bright red maple leaves spread out. At the lower edge of the image, a rock formation set off by ink washes and blooming white camellias complete the autumnal composition, lending it additional depth.
The strong red tones of the foliage stand in appealing contrast to the restrained blue and brown tones of the bird and the branch, while the gold ground of the paper gives the entire painting a festive, warm radiance. The painting bears the signature of Yasuyama Tachiwaki.
This kakemono comes in a specially made, signed wooden box and is painted on silk, with roller rods made of bone and mounted in fine gold brocade with a floral pattern. A fine unique work from the Shôwa period, particularly vivid in its coloring, for lovers of Japanese bird-and-flower painting.
