Description
With luminous shades of blue and delicate feather detail, this hanging scroll captures a small bird perched on a maple branch tinged with autumn color, its leaves shifting between warm red and yellow. The technique of hand painting is evident in the careful modeling of the plumage, built up in several layers of glazing color, while a single red leaf beneath the bird serves as a painterly accent of color.
The combination of songbird and autumn foliage stands within the Japanese pictorial tradition for impermanence and the quiet beauty of the changing seasons - a motif that Kachô-ga painting has produced in countless variations over the centuries.
The work bears the signature and seal of Yoshida Ikugo (1874-1947) and is mounted on a wooden roller. Painted on silk, this hanging scroll dates from the Shôwa period. A colorful collector's piece that vividly captures the warm atmosphere of the Japanese autumn.
