Description
The asagao, the morning glory, has long been regarded in Japan as a symbol of transience, as its delicate blossoms open for only a few morning hours before wilting. On this narrow strip of paper, a vividly blue blossom with a pink center unfolds, surrounded by lush green, heart-shaped leaves and trailing vines.
This hand-painted work from the Shôwa period captivates with its loose, sketch-like brushwork, in which each leaf was laid down in just a few strokes – typical of classical bird-and-flower painting (Kachô-ga). As a Makuri, the work is unmounted and can be mounted or framed according to individual taste.
A cheerful, summery pictorial subject that can be presented in either a classical or contemporary manner, lending any room a quiet, poetic touch.
