Description
The snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji rises majestically above gently layered hills. Scattered gnarled trees on the foreground hills set quiet, dark accents against the golden-brown expanse of the composition.
The depiction of Mount Fuji in the morning light, known as 'Goraiko', has long been regarded as a symbol of new beginnings, happiness, and spiritual renewal, and ranks among the most popular pictorial themes of classical Japanese landscape painting.
The painting bears the signature and seal of Kano Toun and was created in the Meiji period. Painted on silk and fitted with a jikusaki made of bone, this hand-painted unique work is an evocative homage to Japan's sacred mountain.
