Description
Barely more than a hint of form emerges from the evenly light background of the painting: the characteristic silhouette of Fuji, half veiled by drifting mist and low-hanging clouds. The extremely reduced, almost abstract painting style dispenses with any superfluous detail and lets the contour of the sacred mountain speak for itself. Fuji has been regarded as the spiritual center of Japan for centuries and has been captured by countless painters in ever new moods. This particularly restrained, almost meditative interpretation draws the eye to the essential and invites quiet contemplation.
The painting bears the signature and seal of Saeki Kishiyoshi and was created in the Heisei period. Painted on silk and fitted with a jikusaki made of bone, this hand-painted unique work is an exceptionally reduced, poetic testament to the beauty of Japan's national mountain.
