Description
Two striking characters, boldly and confidently brushed, carry the meaning 'Vajra Illuminates the Universe,' a Buddhist term that stands for the indestructible, diamond-like clarity of enlightenment. The powerful brushwork with its dynamic tapering strokes and a red seal in the upper right lend the composition a calm yet resolute presence.
The kakemono was created in the Shôwa period (1926–1989) and hand-written on paper. The vajra, also known as kongō in Japanese Buddhism, is regarded as a symbol of indestructibility and spiritual penetration, and is frequently found in tantric and esoteric schools of Japanese Buddhism.
The fine paper quality of the support gives the bold ink strokes a warm, even ground and underscores the clarity of the composition. For collectors with an interest in Buddhist symbolism, this hanging scroll is a meaningful, powerfully written unique work.
