Description
A single, powerfully executed brushstroke forms the character for "bright" or "radiant" on this shikishi – the ink flows across the cream-colored paper in one continuous, sweeping motion, so that dynamism and calm are felt at the same time. Two red seals and a narrow signature complete the composition and lend it the hand of a Japanese calligrapher of the Shôwa period (1926–1989).
Shikishi are square, sturdier mounting boards traditionally used in Japan for calligraphy and small-format ink painting – their compact format makes them a popular collector's item as well as an atmospheric piece of wall decoration. The character composition shown here symbolizes clarity and positive radiance, a motif found in many facets of Japanese art.
Please note: only the shikishi itself is supplied. The mount visible in the photos serves only to illustrate the presentation and can be ordered separately from us upon request.
