Description

With a single, sweeping character and an explosive splash of ink placed above it, this kakemono commands the entire picture surface. The broad, almost painterly brushstrokes make the character appear less like written script than like an abstract, powerful composition, clearly revealing the influence of free Zenga calligraphy.

Translated, the character means "dragon" – a mythical creature that in East Asian culture stands for power, wisdom, and cosmic energy. The wild, almost untamed ductus of the brushwork seems to capture directly this unruly power of the dragon and lends the sheet a particular dynamic tension that clearly sets it apart from calmer, more formal calligraphy styles.

The work was written by hand on paper in the Taishô period. The hanging scroll has jikusaki made of wood and, through its expressive visual language, is a particularly striking example of Japanese calligraphy art.

Why does the date of creation sometimes not match the artist's dates

Because the two pieces of information speak about different things: the period designation describes the object – support, colors, condition – while the signature reflects which name appears on the painting. In most cases there is no attempt at deception behind this, but rather Japanese painting training: copying from workshop models was the curriculum for centuries, an utsushi is regarded as a bow to the teacher, workshops signed with the master's name, and artist names were passed down within a school. Such a hanging scroll is therefore not a forgery, but a hand-painted one-of-a-kind that continues the formal language of its school – just not the work of the famous name, and priced accordingly.
