Description
A rare find for lovers of Japanese tea ceramics: this black chawan bearing the name "Nyoi" (如意) was made by Kaneko Sadahiro from Fujisawa, crafted in the classical style of Kyoto ware.
The deep, iron-rich glaze gives the bowl a velvety blackness, broken by reddish-brown accents – a result of controlled reduction firing. The reflective surfaces and gentle irregularities create a tension-filled interplay of light and texture. The robust walls and the deliberately irregular rim make the bowl a tactilely intense object, ideal for the meditative enjoyment of matcha.
The chawan is accompanied by a signed wooden box, which also bears the dedication "Shi'en-an Kiga" (思遠庵紀外) – a reference to its association with the Shi'en-an tea school or its circle of collectors. A valuable unique work, significant not only aesthetically but also historically.
