A warm, deep reddish-brown forms the ground of this Akaraku chawan, over which light, cloud-like glaze patches appear scattered as if by chance. This appealing contrast between the rich ground color and the lighter speckles constitutes the special visual charm of this Raku variant.
Akaraku, the 'red Raku ware,' ranks alongside Kuroraku as one of the two classic basic forms of Raku ware, which was developed in Kyoto in the 16th century for the tea ceremony. Shaped by hand at a low firing temperature, Raku ware deliberately dispenses with the potter's wheel, giving each piece its own unmistakable silhouette.
This chawan is delivered in a signed wooden box. As a handcrafted unique work, it is ideally suited for preparing matcha and embodies the quiet aesthetic of wabi-sabi in a special way.
