Identifying Handcrafted Japanese Ceramics: Unique Work or Mass-Produced?

Turn the bowl over. The foot ring reveals in a few seconds whether a human hand shaped it or a plaster mold – if you know what to look for.

Handcrafted Japanese ceramics are recognized above all by the underside. The kōdai (foot ring) is cut with the turning knife and shows unglazed shard, fine tool marks, and often the spiral cutting trace left by lifting the piece from the potter's wheel. In addition, there are ascending throwing rings on the wall, a slightly varying wall thickness, a rim that is never exactly round, and glaze traces such as runs, craters, or pinholes. Mold casting, on the other hand, is indicated by a fine casting seam, uniform wall thickness throughout, a mechanically ground-flat foot, evenly sprayed-on glaze – and irregularities that repeat at the same spot on every piece.

There is a moment when almost everything becomes clear: when you turn a bowl over. The front can hide a great deal, a pretty decoration reliably distracts the eye. The underside, by contrast, is rarely made for the buyer. There it shows how the piece was created – thrown on the wheel, hand-built from a lump of clay, or cast in a plaster mold. You need neither a magnifying glass nor specialized knowledge for this, only a few clues and the willingness to actually pick up a vessel instead of merely looking at it.

Why the foot ring is the most honest spot on the whole vessel

The kōdai (高台, foot ring) is the narrow ring on which a bowl stands. It is formed last: once the clay is leather-hard, the vessel is placed upside down on the wheel and the excess clay is cut away with a turning knife, the kanna. This work leaves traces that no decoration covers. You see slightly uneven cutting edges, small steps where the knife was reapplied, and a ring that, on close inspection, is never a perfect circle.

Almost always the foot remains unglazed, since that is where the piece stands in the kiln. This leaves the shard exposed: you see the actual color of the clay, embedded grains of quartz and feldspar, dark specks of iron. On the standing surface a flat spiral often shows – the cutting mark (itokiri) of the wire with which the vessel was lifted off the wheel. The edge of the glaze there, too, is usually wiped by hand and runs correspondingly unevenly.

Throwing Rings, Finger Marks, and the Question of Symmetry

Working at the wheel, the potter draws the wall upward with the fingers. This creates throwing rings: fine, spiraling ridges that rise in a spiral, usually more pronounced on the outside than on the inside, tapering off toward the rim. Inside a tea bowl, a flat spiral is often found at the bottom, where the whisked matcha collects – known in tea culture as chadamari (tea pool). Hold the piece against raking light at a window, and these lines stand out in relief.

Handwork also means minimal asymmetry. The rim is rarely an exact circle, the wall thickness varies by fractions of a millimeter, and in one spot there is a barely visible dent from the thumb. Now, manufacturers do deliberately shape industrial ware to look "rustic," cast from a hand-thrown original. The difference lies in repetition: with mass-produced ware, every irregularity sits in exactly the same place on every piece. Placing two examples of the same model side by side is therefore the quickest test there is.

Mold seam and uniform wall thickness throughout: the signature of the mold

In slip casting, liquid clay is poured into a multi-part plaster mold that draws out its water; the remainder is poured off, leaving behind a thin, even skin. Where the mold parts meet, a fine ridge remains – a vertical line that runs across the wall and is most pronounced at handles, spouts, and edges. It is usually smoothed away, but it can still be felt with a fingertip, often on the inside of the vessel as well.

Two further indications are similarly reliable. First, the wall thickness: if it is practically identical at the rim, along the wall, and above the foot, a mold was involved, since throwing on the wheel almost always leaves somewhat more mass standing at the bottom. Second, an impeccably even rim with consistent height. Machine trimming adds concentric grooves that look as if drawn with a compass, along with a flat-ground standing surface with a sharp edge. A logo embossed in relief likewise comes from the mold – if incised, it would be recessed.

What the Glaze Reveals: Runs, Craters, and Pinholes

In craft practice, glaze is applied by dipping, pouring, or with a brush. Accordingly, it lies unevenly on the shard: it collects in hollows to form thick, rich zones, runs down the wall in streaks, and thins out at edges until it tears open, so that the color of the clay shows through. During firing, pinholes form, along with small craters and occasionally contracted, pearl-like spots, known in Japanese as kairagi, which are explicitly prized on Karatsu ware or Hagi ware bowls.

Anyone looking for handcrafted Japanese ceramics as a unique work should not read these traces as flaws. They are proof that a single piece went through a single firing – in a different position in the kiln, it would have turned out differently. The contact points also belong to this: a wiped zone at the foot, small marks from kiln supports, a tiny scar. Industrial glaze, by contrast, is sprayed on and lies as evenly as lacquer; where everything is perfectly uniform in thickness, no human hand has guided the ladle.

Yakishime: When Fire and Ash Shape the Surface

With Bizen and Shigaraki ware, glaze is dispensed with entirely. Yakishime (焼締) refers to the hard-fired, unglazed body, whose surface is created solely in the kiln – often in wood firings that run for several days. Flying ash settles on the side facing the fire and melts there into glass: in Bizen as grainy speckles called Goma (sesame), in Shigaraki often forming greenish drops. White feldspar grains burst out onto the surface from the clay.

Equally legible are the carbon markings: gray-blue zones where the piece lay in the reduction, reddish-brown stripes from rice straw that was wrapped around the vessel, and lighter round spots where another vessel stood on the piece in the kiln. Direction is decisive. A genuine Yakishime piece has a fire side and a calmer back side; it can be turned, and it changes as you do so. Industrial ware with brown imitation glaze looks the same all around – it lacks precisely this narrative of its place in the kiln.

Weight, Warmth, and Wall Thickness: What Lifting the Piece Reveals

Pick up the vessel, ideally with your eyes closed. A hand-crafted piece has a weight distribution, not an even mass: more clay usually sits at the bottom, the center of gravity lies low, and as you turn it in your hand, the weight noticeably shifts. Then run your index finger once along the rim. If the rim becomes noticeably thinner or thicker at one point, a hand has drawn it. If it remains exactly the same to the millimeter, that points to a mold.

Warmth, too, is a clue to material and firing. A low-fired, porous Raku ware bowl is astonishingly light and conducts heat poorly – filled, it remains pleasant to the touch on the outside, while the tea stays hot for a long time. Dense Bizen ware body, conversely, weighs more than the eye expects and feels cool and smooth like stone. Thin-walled porcelain, by contrast, heats up quickly. None of this proves handwork on its own, but together they add up to a very clear picture.

Hand-Built Instead of Thrown: Raku ware as a Special Case

Not every handcrafted bowl shows throwing rings, because not every bowl was ever on a wheel. Raku bowls are traditionally built entirely by hand: the potter presses and pulls the form from a lump of clay, works the wall with spatulas, and then cuts the outside into facets with a knife. This becomes visible in flat, slightly angled cut surfaces, in a deliberately irregular rim, and in a wall thickness that varies noticeably from spot to spot.

Then there is the firing: Raku ware pieces are placed individually into the hot kiln and removed glowing with tongs, which accounts for edge zones, smoke traces, and occasionally tong marks. Anyone looking for a Japanese tea bowl that is hand-thrown and not wheel-thrown will find here the clearest case of all – two Raku-yaki chawan by the same master are never alike. Working in a similar way is the related Ohi ware from Kanazawa, with its warm amber-colored glaze.

Signature, Incised Marks and Stamps as Evidence

A mark on the foot is a clue, not proof. What matters less is what it says than how it got there. A mark incised into the damp clay with a needle shows uneven stroke depths and tiny raised burrs along the edges. An impressed potter's stamp pushes the clay up sideways at the edges. Both occur on the soft piece, before firing, and appear correspondingly alive.

A mark, on the other hand, that stands raised with clean flanks from the base was already present in the mold. Printed marks over the glaze can be felt with a fingernail as a smooth overlay. How signatures, seals and the inscribed wooden box can actually be read is a separate, larger subject – here it is enough to look at whether the mark was applied by hand.

Three Simple Tests for the Shop and the Kitchen Table

First, the stability test: place the vessel on a level surface. A hand-carved foot may wobble minimally, and a good potter compensates for this in the construction – a machine-ground base, by contrast, always sits perfectly flat. Second, the rim: run your fingertips slowly along it and pay attention to height, thickness, and edge shape. Hand-worked rims are rounded and slightly wavy, while cast rims appear stamped.

Third, the interior base under raking light, where the spiral, brush stroke, or tool mark are most likely to become visible. The popular sound test – tapping it with a fingernail – incidentally only tells you something about the shard and firing temperature: porcelain rings bright and long, porous earthenware such as Raku ware sounds dull. It reveals nothing about the method of production. And the simplest test of all remains asking the dealer who made the piece; whoever can name the potter and the kiln usually has nothing to hide.

What a Realistic Price Reveals About Production

Do the math for a moment: preparing the clay, throwing, drying for days, trimming the foot, glazing, firing. A wood firing runs for several days, consumes large quantities of firewood, and requires shifts at the kiln. Then there is the reject rate, which can be considerable with wood firing and Raku ware – cracks, glaze that has run, unwanted discoloration. All of this is contained in every single piece, because it is not spread across a thousand copies. A conspicuously low price is therefore rarely a bargain, but usually a piece of information.

Conversely, "handcrafted" alone is not yet a statement about quality. Even a cast cup is decorated by hand, and even a hand-thrown piece can be poorly balanced, roughly finished, or unevenly glazed. Pay attention, therefore, to whether the choices appear deliberate: a foot that is cleanly trimmed and full of character, a rim that suits the form, a glaze that lies thick where it is meant to have effect.

Mass-produced ware is not inferior ware – it should simply be called that

There is nothing wrong with cast tableware or printed decoration. A matching set of everyday cups, an affordable first piece to try things out, a small gift: that is what mass-produced ware is made for, and it often serves its purpose excellently. Problems only arise when it is sold as a one-of-a-kind piece, or when a printed pattern is passed off as hand-painted. This is why the clear question is worth asking: unique work or edition, hand-painted or transfer print?

A transfer print can be recognized by several features: the contours are of uniform thickness throughout, areas of color show a fine dot pattern under a magnifying glass, and at the edge of the motif you can sometimes feel the wafer-thin edge of the foil. Hand-painting, by contrast, shows strokes of varying width, has brush start and end points, and in places runs slightly into the glaze. A reputable seller points out both on their own, without needing to be asked.

Pick Up the Next Bowl

The most beautiful side effect of these examinations is that they change the way you look. Once you have seen how a trimming knife exposes the foot, how ash turns to glass in the kiln, and where the potter's thumb briefly pressed into the wall, you never again look only at the pattern. A vessel becomes legible – and you begin to choose it by weight, rim, and foot ring instead of by first impression.
