An exquisite guinomi by Takeshi Kato, created in the renowned style of Shino ware, presents itself here with extraordinary presence. The artist, a student of Uchida Kunio, continues with this work the venerable tradition of Mino ware, which has been one of the most significant currents in Japanese tea ceramics since the 16th century.
The piece is distinguished by the characteristic, thickly applied Shino glaze, which shifts between delicate white tones and reddish-orange shades, accentuated by dark fire marks. These effects arise from the elaborate anagama wood-firing process, in which the flames and ash of the firing chamber burn unique patterns into the glaze. The result is a vivid "keshiki" – a landscape on the surface that gives the vessel its distinctive character.
Shino ware is known for its calm, earthbound simplicity and, at the same time, its profound expressiveness. In the context of Japanese tea and sake culture, it is regarded as a symbol of the harmony between nature and craftsmanship.
