This chawan made of Ohi ware by Hisashi Ohi captivates with its intense, warm presence and the characteristic depth of its traditional glaze. Ohi-yaki, a tradition-rich pottery from Kanazawa closely related to the Raku tradition, is hand-formed without a potter's wheel and fired at low temperatures. The famous ame-gusuri – an amber to deep brown glaze – creates vivid, unpredictable effects during firing, with glossy and matte areas that lend each piece a unique personality. Hisashi Ohi continues the family tradition of the Ohi Chozaemon lineage with great sensitivity, creating works that place the sensuous beauty of the material in the foreground.
The vessel shows a compact, rounded form with a wide, slightly irregular rim that sits comfortably in the hand when held. The surface glows in a rich spectrum ranging from warm honey yellow and deep amber to almost black shadings.
