Shino-yaki – Japan's First White Glaze and Its Quiet Poetry

Shino-yaki (志野焼) is a Japanese stoneware ceramics from the Mino region (present-day Gifu Prefecture) that emerged in the late 16th century and is considered Japan's oldest white-glazed ceramics. Characteristic is a thick, milky-white feldspar glaze with fine pores and reddish fire marks. After its decline in the Edo period, the technique was reconstructed in the 20th century by the potter Arakawa Toyōzō, who was honored as a Ningen Kokuhō for this achievement. Well-known subtypes are E-Shino (painted), Nezumi-Shino (gray), and Beni-Shino (reddish).

Before Shino-yaki existed, Japanese ceramics knew almost no true white. Most traditions moved within earthy brown tones, deep black, or the shifting green tones of Chinese-inspired glazes. Then, in the late 16th century, an entirely new ceramic style emerged in Mino Province, in present-day Gifu: thick, white glazes with fine pores, delicate reddish fire marks, and an almost cloudy texture, beneath which restrained painting sometimes appears. Shino ware is still considered Japan's first white-glazed ceramics to this day - and one of the quietest, most poetic forms of expression in tea ceramics.

What Is Shino-yaki?

Shino-yaki (志野焼) is a traditional Japanese stoneware ceramic from the Mino region, which emerged in the 16th century during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. It belongs to the broader Mino ware tradition and is the oldest known ceramic in Japan to be covered with a thick, white feldspathic glaze. Origins in the World of the Tea Ceremony

Shino-yaki emerged in the context of the flourishing Japanese tea culture of the late 16th century, at a time when tea masters such as Furuta Oribe – a student of Sen no Rikyū – were searching for new, expressive forms for the tea ceremony. The Mino region, which is geographically closely connected to the older ceramics center of Seto, became one of the most important fields of experimentation of this period: craftsmen who had fled Seto during the turmoil of civil war settled here and, under the protection of local feudal lords, developed several new styles – alongside Shino, also the green-glazed Oribe-yaki, the black Setoguro, and the yellowish Ki-Seto. Today, all four are collectively regarded as the four great forms of the Mino ware tradition.

The Characteristic Glaze

The element that gives Shino ware its name is its thick, milky-white feldspar glaze, which is applied considerably more voluminously than in most other Japanese ceramic traditions. During firing in a wood-fired kiln, the uneven distribution of heat produces fine pores and small holes in the glaze surface, as well as reddish to orange spots, so-called "fire spots," which arise from the reaction of the iron-rich clay body with the glaze. Because the Shino glaze begins to melt at comparatively low temperatures, it is generally applied as the first glaze layer, before further glazes are applied if applicable. Traditionally, an anagama or noborigama, a tunnel or chamber kiln, is used for firing, in which temperatures of up to 1,400 degrees Celsius can be reached.

The Four Subtypes of Shino

Over the centuries, several subvariants developed within the Shino tradition. E-Shino, "painted Shino," shows motifs applied under the glaze with iron oxide – the Metropolitan Museum of Art lists under this type, for instance, a water dropper in the shape of a raccoon dog from the early 17th century – oft simple plant patterns or abstract lines that shimmer through the overlying white glaze as if through a mist. Nezumi-Shino, "mouse Shino," is created by applying an iron-rich slip under the glaze and produces grayish to reddish-brown tones. Beni-Shino shows a more reddish, warmer overall effect, while pure Muji-Shino dispenses with painting altogether and works solely through the texture of the glaze itself. This diversity makes Shino-yaki one of the most expressive and varied ceramic traditions of Japan, even though it always remains understated in appearance.

Forgotten and Rediscovered

After its heyday during the Momoyama period, the production of Shino-yaki fell largely into oblivion during the Edo period; the exact origin and production technique of the historical pieces remained unclear for a long time, and its origin was initially mistakenly assumed to be in Seto rather than Mino. It was not until the 20th century that the potter Arakawa Toyōzō (1894–1985) from Tajimi began systematically searching for the original kiln sites of the Momoyama period. Through excavations of old kiln sites in the Mino region, he succeeded in reconstructing the historical clay bodies and firing techniques with which he was able to revive the art of Shino-yaki, believed to have been lost. For this achievement, Arakawa was later designated a Ningen Kokuhō, a "Living National Treasure" - an honorary title bestowed by the Japanese state on holders of particularly significant intangible cultural techniques.

Wabi-Sabi in White

However restrained Shino-yaki may appear at first glance, it embodies the aesthetic of wabi-sabi with striking consistency: the appreciation of the irregular, the imperfect, and the deliberately unfinished. The shapes of Shino vessels are mostly squat, slightly asymmetrical, and thus appear surprisingly light, even though the clay itself is often worked in thick walls. It is precisely the unpredictability of the fire marks and pores that makes each Shino piece unique – a counterpoint to the flawless uniformity of industrially glazed ceramics.

Shino Ware in Use

Shino-yaki has traditionally been used above all for chawan (tea bowls), small bowls, and sake vessels, but is also found in the form of vases and everyday tableware. The comparatively thick, slightly porous glaze absorbs color nuances from tea over the course of use and thus develops, similarly to other Japanese tea ceramics, a fine individual patina. Anyone wishing to distinguish a handcrafted original from industrial mass-produced ware should pay attention to the characteristic, never exactly symmetrical fire markings as well as fine, irregularly distributed pores in the glaze – features that cannot be reproduced in printed or molded tableware.

The Legendary Status of the Shino Chawan "Unohanagaki"

Among connoisseurs of Japanese tea ceramics, one particular Shino tea bowl is regarded as one of the most significant masterpieces in the entire history of Momoyama ceramics: the chawan known as "Unohanagaki," which has even been designated a National Treasure in Japan – a distinction bestowed on only a very small number of ceramic objects. This extraordinary esteem for a single tea bowl illustrates the standing that Shino-yaki holds within Japanese art history: it is not a mere marginal phenomenon of Mino ware, but one of the most artistically demanding and highly esteemed expressions of Japanese tea ceramics altogether.

This high esteem also explains why contemporary Shino potters continue to approach the historical models of the Momoyama period with great respect to this day: many of them explicitly understand their work as a continuation of a dialogue with the great masters of that early golden age, whose names have often not been handed down, and whose technical and aesthetic legacy was only fully made accessible again in the 20th century through the research work of Arakawa Toyōzō. This attitude of respectful continuation, rather than mere imitation, still shapes the self-perception of many Shino potters in the Mino region to this day.
