Description
A deep brown shading into aubergine with fine golden flecks makes this tea bowl a particularly refined example of Raku-yaki. The thick glaze was applied in several layers and cooled rapidly during the open firing, producing the shimmering color gradations characteristic of Raku – no two pieces show exactly the same pattern. The chawan bears the signature of Shoraku Heian and has a pleasingly round, well-proportioned shape.
In raking light, the fine golden flecks in the glaze stand out clearly, lending the otherwise dark surface an understated preciousness. The wall was hand-built and is slightly uneven, giving the bowl a warm, immediate tactile quality.
The tea bowl is delivered in a wooden box signed by the potter, which provides safe storage and documents its provenance. A stylish piece from the Shōwa period, suitable both for the tea ceremony and as a fine display object for collectors of Raku ware.
