Description
With its rough, scar-textured surface and deep black glaze, this tea bowl seems almost like a fragment of frozen night. The shimmering brown tones that emerge beneath the rich black result from the characteristic interplay of glaze and firing temperature of Seto ware – one of the six old kiln traditions of Japan, with a history reaching back to the medieval period.
The chawan bears the stamp of the potter Haruo Kato and shows a deliberately irregular, slightly oval shape, typical of handcrafted tea bowls. The foot, left white, forms an appealing contrast to the dark body and draws the eye to the careful craftsmanship. The textured, almost leathery feel of the glaze makes holding the bowl a sensory experience that goes beyond the purely visual.
