Description

Warm, earthy tones define the character of this Shigaraki chawan by Shogetsu Matsuoka. The surface shows a lively interplay of rough areas, mineral fusions, and light ash spots that are irregularly distributed across the reddish-brown base structure. These natural traces of wood firing lend the piece an archaic depth and make every viewing angle unique.

The slightly conical form tapers into a small, compact foot that gives the chawan visual stability. Inside, the warm coloring continues harmoniously, though with a somewhat smoother texture, so that the bowl sits comfortably in the hand during use.

A signed wooden box accompanies the work and documents its provenance. The interplay of material, fire, and form represents the aesthetic directness for which Shigaraki ware is valued.
