Description
A deep dark, almost black glossy tea bowl, its wall decorated with fine, brightly emerging characters – an unusual detail that sets this chawan apart from plainer Raku ware pieces.
This chawan is the work of Shogetsu Kikko. The rich, evenly glossy glaze stands in appealing contrast to the incised characters that run across the surface like calligraphic streaks, lending the bowl an almost literary quality. The compact, slightly conical shape with the clearly set-off foot follows the classical chawan tradition and rests well in both hands, as the tea ceremony requires.
The bowl comes in a wooden box signed by the master potter, which serves both as proof of authenticity and as a dignified storage for daily or ceremonial use.
