A tea bowl with a vivid orange glaze, crossed by dark, irregularly running streaks – a play of color characteristic of the fast, controlled cooling process of the Raku firing technique.

This chawan is by Toraku Morisato.

The slightly wavy, organically shaped rim and the fine crackle cracks in the glaze underscore the deliberate departure from symmetry and perfection typical of Raku ware. The dark streaks run seemingly at random across the walls, giving each bowl of this kind a unique, unrepeatable pattern – a basic principle of Wabi-Sabi aesthetics, which regards irregularity as a value in its own right.
