Description
The fresh, blooming grace of classical Kyo-yaki unfolds in this chawan by Hashimoto Eiho with a serene, poetic lightness. Hashimoto Eiho, a talented Kyoto ceramicist, is counted among the contemporary masters of the Kiyomizu-yaki tradition. He creates hand-painted pieces that are often influenced by nature and the elegant painting of earlier Kenzan or Ninsei inspirations. His works combine fine underglaze painting with delicate colors and gold accents to achieve a harmonious, almost impressionistic effect – typical of the refined, urban aesthetic of Kyoto ware, which has enriched the tea ceremony for centuries.
The vessel has a wide, shallow form with a gently curved rim, ideal for summer and offering the matcha ample space to cool. The light, creamy-white base glaze shows fine craquelure cracks and subtle brown and pink tones that resemble delicate earth-colored patches. In the foreground, luminous narcissi bloom with white petals, golden centers, and vivid green leaves that sweep dynamically across the wall. The carefully applied painting with gold outlines gives the flowers a vivid presence and makes them stand out almost three-dimensionally from the light background.
As a handcrafted unique work by an esteemed Kyoto master, this chawan is presented in a signed wooden box, underscoring its authenticity and its special value for collectors. It is excellently suited for the tea ritual, where the bright form, the blooming decoration, and the pleasant tactile quality create a fresh, uplifting mood.
