Description
The cherry blossom is regarded in Japan as a symbol for the transience and beauty of the moment, and it is precisely this motif that adorns the outer wall of this small sake cup. Delicate pink sakura blossoms with dark centers stand out against a rich indigo blue, while the interior of the cup is kept in a warm pink tone reminiscent of the blossom's own color. The guinomi bears the stamp of Akitoshi Kurosaki and combines painterly attention to detail with a classic round shape.
The painting was applied by hand, recognizable by the slight irregularities in the leaf shapes and linework, which lend the motif a lively, by no means uniform effect. Beneath the glaze, the pale shard shimmers through in places, giving the cup additional depth.
Delivered in a wooden box signed by the master potter, this sake cup is suited both for use in drinking sake and as a decorative object during springtime. A charming piece from the Shōwa period that captures the Japanese fondness for seasonal motifs in ceramic form.
