Description
Clear and disciplined, character follows character as the text of the Heart Sutra (Hannya Shingyo) unfolds along the entire length of this kakemono. The fine, controlled brushwork and the carefully placed red seals attest to the practiced hand of a Japanese calligrapher of the Shôwa period (1926–1989).
The copying of the Heart Sutra – known in Japanese as Shakyo – is regarded as a spiritual practice in which each character is set down with full attention in order to bring mind and body into harmony. The wooden ends of the roller rods blend unobtrusively into the calm overall appearance of this kakemono.
This calligraphy comes in a signed wooden box (Tomobako), which further confirms authenticity and provenance.
