Description
This Kannon figure was created by Shibaoka Tsukuru and depicts the Bodhisattva of Compassion with an elaborately shaped headdress, closed eyes, and a gentle, serene facial expression. Fine details such as the beaded forehead ornament and the necklace are carefully worked out, lending the figure an almost precious appearance despite the earthy Bizen firing technique.
The unglazed, warm brown surface with its shifting shades results from the characteristic wood-fired kiln process of the Bizen tradition, in which the flow of flame and the deposition of ash shape each piece individually. The contrast between the rough firing texture and the finely modeled facial features is what gives this work its particular appeal.
Kannon depictions are among the most popular motifs of Japanese ceramic art and are valued both as devotional objects and as elegant sculpture. For collectors of Bizen ware or Buddhist iconography, this work is an expressive and personally signed addition.
