Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion, is among the most frequently depicted figures in Japanese Buddhism. In this Bizen ware, she appears with a tall, elaborately shaped headdress, a lowered gaze, and folded hands – a posture that conveys quiet empathy and inner calm.
The unglazed, warm earthy surface of the Bizen ware results from the characteristic firing process of this tradition, in which wood ash and the flow of flame within the kiln shape the coloring of each piece individually.
