Description
In this kakemono, a narrow waterfall plunges between rugged rock formations into a calm river course, on which two raftsmen use long poles to propel their simple raft forward. In the background, further rocks suggest a winding path that climbs up into the wooded slopes.
The ink work skillfully alternates between strong, dark accents for rocks and trees and lighter, open areas for water and sky, creating a convincing sense of depth. The two tiny human figures on the raft provide a lively counterpoint to the overwhelming natural setting while also making clear its immense scale.
Motifs featuring waterfalls and raftsmen are among the classic subjects of Chinese-Japanese landscape painting, which always depict man as a small, respectful part of a greater natural order. For lovers of dynamic landscape compositions, this kakemono, Landscape with Waterfall and Raftsmen, is a lively enrichment.
