Description
This Makuri painting dates from the Shôwa period and shows autumn-colored maple foliage in vivid red, orange, and yellow, above which a small bird with outspread wings flies through the air. The painting deliberately relies on a reduced, nearly empty background, which gives the luminous leaves and the delicately painted bird ample room to unfold.
Autumn foliage combined with a bird in flight is one of the classic motifs of Kachô-ga painting and symbolizes the transition of the seasons as well as the fleeting beauty of the moment, which is described in Japanese aesthetics as Mono no Aware. The high-contrast coloring of the leaves against the quiet flight of the bird creates a particularly lively, almost musical pictorial composition.
This work is a Makuri, an unframed painting on Honshi paper without hanging scroll mounting. A colorful, immediate collector's item for lovers of Japanese autumn motifs, suitable both for individual framing and for direct presentation.
