Description
Above a gently undulating hill landscape, the full moon stands in the evening sky, while several birds have settled on a branch on the slope – a classic depiction of Tsukimi, the autumn moon viewing that has been cultivated in Japan for centuries. Scattered pines and a small farmstead line the rise, lending the scene a human closeness amid nature.
This kakemono belongs to a depiction of the four seasons, in which each image carries its own mood and symbolism. Here, autumn is characterized not by brightly colored foliage but by the quiet, contemplative atmosphere of the full moon evening. The scene is painted on silk, whose fine texture lends the ink tones additional luster.
The jikusaki at the ends of the roller rods is made of wood. For collectors interested in the depiction of the seasons in Japanese painting, this kakemono, "Moonlit Night over Autumn Hills," is a particularly poetic choice.
