Description

A mountain peak emerges from dense mist, while further below a thatched house nestles against a wooded rocky outcrop. Directly beneath it, a twin-stranded waterfall plunges into the depths and dissolves into the green of the slope. The fresh light green of the young foliage and the turquoise moss on the rock set luminous accents within an otherwise soft and restrained scenery.

The composition draws its life from the interplay between concealing and revealing: the mist swallows the mountain flanks and releases individual sections, creating a depth that extends far beyond the actual picture format. This very play with the unsaid is among the characteristic devices of Japanese landscape painting. The turquoise cushions of moss on the rock are applied with small, deliberate dots, lending the damp scenery additional freshness.

The motif is executed as a screen print on silk and mounted in a brocade frame, with the signature found in the lower right. As a hanging scroll, it brings the quiet, damp atmosphere of a Japanese mountain morning into the room and is well suited for anyone seeking a calm, nature-close pictorial mood.
