Description
Soft ink shadings let distant peaks blur into haze, while gnarled pines in the foreground set clear contours - a mountain landscape that relies entirely on the power of ink and water. The interplay between dense and translucent brushstrokes creates spatial depth and an almost tangible stillness.
Mountain motifs of this kind stand in the tradition of Suiboku-ga, the Chinese-influenced ink painting that has been valued in Japan for centuries for contemplative depictions of nature. Mist-shrouded peaks are regarded as a symbol of the elusive and transient in nature.
A Shikishi is a firm mounting board traditionally used for painting and calligraphy. Only the Shikishi itself is supplied - the mount visible in the photos serves only for illustration and is available separately from us. A calm, contemplative landscape motif for lovers of classical Japanese ink painting.
