Description
Two narrow waterfalls plunge over moss-covered rock steps, gathering into a jade-green shimmering stream that draws the eye from top to bottom through the entire image. Halfway up, several thatched-roof houses stand behind a simple fence, above which a gently rounded mountain fades into the haze.
Remarkable is the restraint of color: the landscape is laid out almost entirely in ink tones, only the water carries a cool tinge of green that makes the flowing movement visible and calms the scene. The boldly drawn pines in the foreground, by contrast, set dark, clearly contoured accents and give structure to the layering of depth.
Landscapes with homesteads by the water are among the most popular subjects of Japanese hanging scroll painting, because they capture the interplay of wild nature and modest human life in a single view. Signature and red seal appear at the lower right. Rendered as a screen print on silk and mounted in a simple frame, this hanging scroll is a fitting choice for a quietly appointed room.
