Description
With flowing feather ornaments on his helmet and a tense posture, a samurai guides his white horse through tall, autumn-colored grass, while a retainer on foot runs alongside him with a lance. Vivid red and orange tones of the armor stand out vividly against the muted color palette of the landscape, in which individual birds cross the vast sky. The dynamic composition with the arrested moment of the horse's movement and the carefully worked-out details of the armor testify to great painterly skill.
Historical warrior scenes like this one are among the popular motifs of Japanese painting and recall the ideals of courage, loyalty, and honor of the samurai era.
The work bears the signature and seal of Mizumi and was created in the Shôwa period. Painted on silk and fitted with a jikusaki made of wood, this hand-painted unique work brings vivid history and powerful coloring into any room.
